Celebrating the Legacy of Reform: Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti (March 6th)
Every year on March 6th, India celebrates the birth anniversary of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, a revolutionary figure who left an enduring mark on the social and religious landscape of the 19th century.
Born Mool Shankar Tiwari in 1824, Dayanand’s life was driven by a relentless pursuit of truth. He firmly believed that the true essence of Hinduism had been obscured by social inequities and ritualistic practices.
Driven by his convictions, Dayanand became a vocal critic of social evils like caste discrimination, idol worship, and child marriage. He challenged these practices, arguing that they deviated from the core values enshrined in the Vedas. In 1875, he founded the Arya Samaj, a reform movement aimed at reviving the Vedic ideals of social justice, egalitarianism, and education.
